Depending on the body type and year of manufacture, the mounting points differ.
How to remove the front bumper
Volkswagen T4 Transporter.
- in the wheel arches, we unscrew two screws on each side, which fasten the sides.
- remove the license plate along with the frame.
- under the license plate cap head unscrew two bolts.
- with an assistant, we remove the front bumper forward from the guide elements in the wings.
- (if any) disconnect the fog lamp connectors.
Volkswagen T4 Caravelle, Multivan.
- open the hood.
- we pull the springs behind the headlights and remove the turn signals.
- we unscrew two screws in the front part of the lining under the radiator grille.
- unscrew the two screws under the direction indicators, release the latches in the fenders and remove the cover plate between the headlights and the bumper.
- under the cover plate, we unscrew the four screws that secure the upper part of the front bumper.
- (on both sides) in the wheel arch, unscrew the two screws that secure the sides.
- with an assistant, we remove the front bumper forward from the guide profiles in the wings (we look for wires).
- disconnect the fog lamp connectors (if any).
How to remove the rear bumper
Volkswagen T4 Caravelle, Multivan, Transporter.
There are two main options for attaching the rear bumper.
The first one is removed together with a metal amplifier. The bumper is attached to the amplifier with two TORX bolts at the top and four at the bottom. The lower bolts are easy to unscrew, but the upper ones are very problematic, they are hidden under the body. You can use a short or curved TORX nozzle, but you risk ripping off the slots in the bolts. Therefore, it is correct to remove the bumper together with the metal amplifier.
- in wheel arches, we unscrew one screw on each side, which fix the corners to the wings, and one screw on each side, which are twisted from the bottom up.
- under the bottom, we unscrew the four bolts that attach the amplifier brackets to the body.
- with the assistant, we remove the rear bumper from the guide profiles in the wings (pull back. Please note that if there is a tow bar, the whole structure will be very heavy).
The second option is easier and the bumper is removed without an amplifier.
- open the trunk lid.
- in the trunk opening, we pull out two plugs and unscrew two screws under them.
- pull out two pins near the taillights.
- we unscrew two screws (twisted from the bottom up) from the bottom side.
- with an assistant, we remove the bumper back from the guide elements in the wings.
